Shirley Manson: An appreciation of the singer, actress and cyborg psychopath.

While many in the UK mainly know Shirley Manson as the frontwoman of globally popular alt rock act Garbage, recently she has shown another side to herself as an actor, most notably in the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the TV hit spin-off of the Terminator movie franchise.

Shirley's ice-cool demeanour and unique voice brought her to the attention of Butch Vig and co in the early 90s, back when she was fronting Angelfish, after also playing keyboards in Goodbye Mr McKenzie.

The first Garbage album, featuring Shirley on vocals, became one of the definitive alternative rock albums of the 1990s, and saw the band play all over the world with some of the biggest names in music, while becoming a massive household name in their own right. Subsequent albums may have not had the same success as that seminal debut, but still Garbage retained a loyal fanbase up to the very end.

Now that Shirley has turned to acting, we may well be seeing a vibrant new talent entering the world of TV and film, and even if Manson doesn't continue acting once her Terminator character is, erm, terminated, fans have been left with more Manson to enjoy.

An unconventionally beautiful woman with an incredible voice and presence, Shirley manson is one of the modern age's truly unique celebrities.
